Eagerly awaited news has just broken from Cologne in Germany this evening, October 1, 2018. Today Indian Motorcycle, America’s First Motorcycle Company, set a new standard for American motorcycling with the unveiling of the FTR 1200 and FTR 1200 S. The FTR platform proudly breaks new ground and answers the call of enthusiasts around the world anxiously awaiting its debut.

Inspired by Indian Motorcycle’s storied history and success in flat track racing, the FTR 1200 and FTR 1200 S take design and styling cues from the championship-winning FTR750 race bike that has dominated American Flat Track since it was introduced in 2016. It also takes styling inspiration from the FTR1200 Custom, unveiled a year ago as an exploration of what a flat track-inspired street bike could be. The platform delivers an American motorcycle with true flat tracker style and the performance to back it up.

The FTR 1200 combines race inspired design and nimble handling with an upright riding position to create a commanding riding experience. A new 1203cc V-Twin engine with approximately 120 horsepower provides an impressively flat torque curve for flexibility and strong acceleration in any gear. This new platform is a key component in the company’s broader mission to expand its global appeal and reach new riders.

“Our vision from the beginning was to be more than a traditional American V-twin brand. We continually seek to broaden Indian Motorcycle’s reach to a wider range of riders, and FTR 1200 represents a significant step forward in that strategy,” said Steve Menneto, President, Indian Motorcycle. “Indian Motorcycle was founded on performance and innovation, and we remain grounded by our founder’s mindset of constantly pushing forward. In light of that history, the FTR 1200 is a natural extension for the brand that we couldn’t be more excited about.”

Built around a trellis frame with a sporty riding position, both models feature an inverted front suspension with radially mounted dual Brembo brakes for exceptional control and stopping power. The fuel tank is strategically located under the seat for a lower center of gravity and more centralised weight distribution. Similar to the FTR750 race bike, the airbox is positioned directly above the engine to optimise airflow and maximise power. Both models feature a similar rear suspension and swingarm design as the FTR750 to not only provide a race bike look, but also ensure maximum grip with a compliant ride. Newly-developed Dunlop street tyres with flat track-inspired tread, a chain final drive, and ProTaper flat tracker aluminum handlebars complete the race bike look.

“This is an extremely exciting platform for us, and after investing such a significant amount of time, expertise and energy in the design process, it’s an incredible feeling to finally show the world these motorcycles,” said Rich Christoph, the Indian Motorcycle Senior Designer who was also instrumental in the design of the FTR750 and FTR1200 Custom. “Our primary focus was to ensure these motorcycles carried the same lines and form language as the FTR750 and 1200 Custom. We knew that’s what riders around the world fell in love with. I couldn’t be more proud to turn the FTR750 into a flat tracker for the street and help launch Indian into a new era.”

Adding to the design is a host of premium features and ride-enhancing technologies. The FTR 1200 and FTR 1200 S models both feature full LED lighting, including a new headlight that provides an unmistakable face for the new platform, a fast-charge USB port to easily charge mobile devices and cruise control for a comfortable ride.

Propelling both models is a powerful new liquid-cooled 1203cc V-twin engine making an approximately 120 horsepower (90 kW) and 85 ft-lbs (115 Nm) of torque. A flat torque curve ensures a progressive, predictable power delivery with loads of low-end punch and flexibility. The engine features a 12.5:1 compression ratio, high flow cylinder heads, and dual throttle bodies for optimal throttle response and power delivery. Additionally, the engine makes wide use of magnesium to lower weight and utilises a low-inertia crankshaft that allows the engine to rev to its redline quickly for thrilling acceleration.

The FTR 1200 S features all that and more, including;

  • Fully adjustable front and rear piggy-back suspension with preload, compression, and rebound adjustments so riders can perfectly match the bike to their personal riding style
  • 4.3-inch customisable Ride Command LCD touch screen with Bluetooth compatibility
  • Lean-angle sensitive stability control, ABS traction control, and wheelie mitigation control for improved confidence and control
  • Three Ride Modes (Sport, Standard, Rain) with unique throttle response traction control intervention levels

The new platform underwent extensive development and testing to ensure it meets Indian Motorcycle’s high quality standards and performs at the highest levels.

“These bikes have gone through a rigorous, multi-year design and testing process to ensure that they perform as good as they look,” explains Ben Lindaman, Indian Motorcycle Senior International Product Manager. “The process was incredibly robust, including over one million miles logged through simulated rides. We also accumulated tens of thousands of test miles on the street with input from racers, including our championship winning Wrecking Crew flat track team and former Grand Prix racers.”

The FTR 1200 is available in Thunder Black, while the FTR 1200 S is available in Indian Motorcycle Red over Steel Gray, Titanium Metallic over Thunder Black Pearl, and a Race-Replica paint scheme, matching the iconic FTR750 race bike. Both models will begin shipping to dealers in the first half of 2019.

Riders Club Outing

Earlier this year the Dead Ducks motorcycle club, a group of ner do well misfits in need of a large dose of karmic credit ran the Rev Up event across Ireland. Thanks to the ongoing support of the Irish motorcycling community and a well researched route the participants raised enough money to buy a mini bus for the Holy Angels School in Chapelizod.
There were a whole host of people involved and the fundraiser couldn’t have come together without the help of The Lords Taverners, a group of cricket fans who’ve named themselves after a pub. If ever the dead Ducks had a non motorcycling doppelgänger these guys are it!
The bus is now ready to be delivered and will be done in the memory of the late Aidan Lynam later this month. His daughter attends the school, which caters for children with mild learning disorders and will be used for educational outings, which will add greatly to the children’s educational experience. As befits any vehicle carrying a cargo as special as this one the drivers will need to be properly trained.
Since doing this training costs money, €490 per person, the ‘Ducks have once again stepped up to the plate and are organising a Poker Run to raise the necessary funds to get this done. The event will take place on Sunday the 30th of September next and costs €10 per bike to take part in.The Indian owners club will, of course, be taking part. We’ll be meeting at Il Panorama in Portmarnock at 9.30am next Sunday morning, September 30th. For more details sign on to our Facebook page where we’ll be posting details and we’ll see you on the road…

Stock Taking Event

We do our annual stock count in October. We have a number of problems with this previous sentence, they are as follows; October, stock and count. We have Hedon helmets, John Doe jeans and shirts, the full range of Kriega luggage, stacks of t-shirts, a full range of branded Indian clothing, Sena communications systems, Battery Tender systems, Macna clothing, Stylmartin boots, Roof helmets and cans of Vulcanet to keep all your bikes clean.

Everything needs to be counted to keep the accounts department happy and it’s a job that none of us look forward to. To help save time when counting all this stock we’ve decided to have a one day sale. We’ll be taking a few quid off everything, we’ll have the Indian demo fleet ready to ride and we’ll have the best coffee in town ready when you arrive.

Rather cleverly we’ll be discounting our wares depending on who has been assigned to count it. Anything allocated to Sean attracts a 5% discount. If it’s allocated to Peter it gets 10% and Barrys chores get 20%. If Keith has to count it, guess who thinks they’re the most important person in the building, then you can enjoy a full 30% off.

Once again the event takes place all this week from Saturday the 22ndand we look forward to seeing you here from 10am. And remember, we’re not desperate; we’re just feeling a bit lazy…

New Chief, Springfield & Roadmaster Models for 2019

New Ride-Enhancing Technology Improves Performance, Comfort, & Audio Quality;

Dark Horse Style Updates and Expanded Colour Options Round Out Upgrades for 2019.

Indian Motorcycle, America’s first motorcycle company founded in 1901, today announced its 2019 Chief, Springfield and Roadmaster models with new technology designed to enhance and customise the riding experience. Dark Horse models also get darker with premium gloss black finishes and expanded colour options on Springfield Dark Horse.

Developed in direct response to rider feedback, the new technology features focus on improving performance, comfort, and providing more customisability. The new features include:

Selectable Ride Modes

Riders can now choose between three Ride Modes on the fly – Tour, Standard or Sport – for a ride experience that’s customised to their riding style. The throttle map for each Ride Mode was designed with a specific application in mind, resulting in one motorcycle with three distinct personalities. “Tour” mode features a smooth throttle response for relaxed cruising. “Standard” mode features a crisp throttle response and well-balanced power delivery for responsive passing power and predictable, slow-speed handling. And finally, “Sport” mode features an instant throttle response and aggressive power delivery for head-snapping acceleration.

Rear Cylinder Deactivation

To increase rider comfort, all Thunder Stroke® 111 models are now equipped with Rear Cylinder Deactivation. When the engine reaches operating temperature and the ambient temperature exceeds 15°C, the rear cylinder will automatically deactivate when the bike is at a standstill, resulting in less engine heat for improved comfort in slow-moving or stopped traffic. The rear cylinder instantly reactivates when throttle is applied for a seamless transition to full power.

Improved Airflow on Roadmaster Lower Fairings

The lower fairings on the 2019 Roadmaster have been redesigned and optimised to provide significantly more airflow to the rider. This greatly improves comfort while cruising down the road. The redesigned airflow vent can be adjusted from all the way open for maximum airflow to fully closed for total weather protection. The new lowers can be retrofit to bikes from past model years with the addition of new highway bars.

 Enhanced Audio System

Several enhancements have been made to Indian Motorcycle’s stock audio system to significantly improve sound quality. First, the tweeters have been separated from the mid-range speakers to optimise sound output and clarity. Second, a dynamic equaliser that’s fully customisable now adjusts specific frequencies at different vehicle speeds to provide peak system performance at all times. As speed increases, the equaliser automatically adjusts each frequency to the optimal level to compensate for road, wind and engine noise. The result is crystal clear, 100-watt premium audio at all speeds.

“These enhancements for 2019 showcase our commitment to listening to riders and continuously improving their experience with our products,” said Steve Menneto, President, Indian Motorcycle.  “We are laser-focused on delivering a best-in-class riding experience, and these new technologies represent a focus on quality that will continue long into the future of Indian Motorcycle.”

Also for 2019, Chief Dark Horse and Springfield Dark Horse receive several style updates that further accentuate their mean, custom styling. These models now boast premium gloss black finishes on the engine including the primary, valve, and cam covers, push-rod tubes, as well as on the exhaust and saddlebag hinges.

Springfield Dark Horse is now offered in two colours – Thunder Black Smoke and a new White Smoke option. Also, notable for the 2019 Springfield Dark Horse is the addition of the iconic Indian headdress on the front fender and a 19” contrast-cut wheel. The front highway bars and windshield were also removed to punctuate its sleek, streamlined stance.

Indian Motorcycle offers a wide range of authentic accessories for riders to customise their bike’s style, comfort and storage. Exciting additions to the accessory line will be announced shortly.

Indian Motorcycle announces 2019 Scout and Scout Bobber

The new Scout

Indian Motorcycle has announced its 2019 Scout and Scout Bobber with new paint options. Also new for 2019, The Scout and Scout Bobber will receive a USB charging port located near the speedometer, a convenient and easy access feature that allows owners to charge a personal device while riding.

“The iconic Indian Scout family is a favourite amongst riders across the globe,” said Reid Wilson, Senior Director for Indian Motorcycle. “Since the addition of the Scout Bobber in July 2017, we’ve continued to evolve our Scout offering to meet the tastes of various riders, whether they prefer the heritage-inspired look of the Scout or the stripped-down, blacked-out attitude of Scout Bobber. The refinements we’ve made for 2019 and the new paint options accentuate the wide appeal of the Scout line.”

The iconic Indian Scout, which packs a 1133 cc, liquid-cooled engine that puts out 94 horsepower, is offered in Thunder Black, Deep Water Metallic, Metallic Jade, Indian Motorcycle Red over Thunder Black and Willow Green over Ivory Cream. Rounding out the lineup is the aggressively-styled Scout Bobber, now offered in Thunder Black, Thunder Black Smoke, White Smoke and Bronze Smoke.

For current Scout owners looking to add the benefits of the USB charging port, Indian Motorcycle will now offer a USB Charging Port Kit, which can be installed on any 2015-2018 Scout or Scout Bobber model and any 2016-2018 Scout Sixty model.

Indian Motorcycle offers a full line of Scout touring accessories, including bags, passenger seats, and windscreens. With Indian Motorcycle Accessories, a rider can customise their Scout with reduced and extended reach seats, handlebars and foot controls to achieve the perfect fit.

The Other American Bike

Here at Franklin Motorcycles we’re proud to represent the Indian brand. As we’ve grown over the last few years we’ve seen some very interesting machinery come in. We’re happy to take all and any brand of motorcycle, and even the odd car, as trade ins. Every now and then we get something very interesting to sell and this week we’ve put a very rare Harley Davidson Fatboy on the floor.

The other ‘American brand’ are celebrating being in business almost as long as Indian and to that end they’ve released a limited run of anniversary specials. This one is the iconic Fatboy and as the anniversary special it’s numbered 813 of a production run of only 1100 models available worldwide! They are, of course, all sold at this point.

This bike is powered by the bigger 114ci big twin, all new, Milwaukee Eight V Twin Motor and is sitting on a very impressive 240mm rear and 160mm front tyre. These, when combined with the solid disc wheels, give the machine that undeniable muscular look.

The bike is finished with a set of Vance and Hines two into two chrome pipes and the simple sissy bar which offers the pillion comfort while not taking anything away from the classic look of the bike. The screen on the front of the machine is a quick release affair that is easy to fit or remove without tools.

The bike is finished in the very tasteful Legend Blue on Vivid Black. The seat is a comfortable 675mm affair, the fuel injection is clean and the rake of the front forks makes for a dynamic handling motorcycle. New this cost €28,000, this one is still on a UK plate, but we’ll organise getting it registered for you.

The extras are worth €2,500, the total value of this package is €30,500. The great news is that this bike has less than six hundred miles on the clock! As such it comes with a full factory warranty and all the associated privileges. Give any of the team a call on 015385005 to express an interest. With the price on this one being dropped to €27,000 we don’t expect to have it in stock for long…

Touring in style

The iconic Indian Springfield is now available to test ride here from Franklin Motorcycles in Dublin’s’ Swords, the home of all things Indian here in Ireland. The business is now in its second year of trading and going from strength to strength with riders collecting their new bikes every week and those all important sales targets being met!

The bike is powered by equally iconic Thunder Stroke 111 V Twin engine. This monster of a power plant produces 119 foot pounds of torque. The chassis that it’s housed in offers stability and balance. Complimented by state of the art ABS and a lightweight aluminum frame married to a substantial front end with a rake of 25 degrees this is a bike that handles and is easy to control.

Creature comforts are second to none on the Springfield. The keyless ignition is made all the more practical with a set of remote lockable panniers. You simply never need to take the fob out of your pocket. Speaking of which if you do leave it in your other jacket and ride away without it there is a manual override that will allow you to restart the bike without it.

The extra set of driving lights either side of the headlamp give the bike significant road presence and the quick release windshield works a treat when days of city work render it unnecessary. The deep seats for both rider and pillion are complimented with footboards all round for added comfort.

The chrome headlight nacelle runs back to the simple tank mounted clocks. The controls are easy to use resting as they do on either end of the highway bars that stretch back to the rider allowing him or her to ride in unhurried comfort. Even the thank is finished with a raised Indian script logo. The front mudguard, or fender, is a valanced affair and is finished with an Indian war bonnet.

These machines are incredibly rewarding and easy to ride. Ground clearance is great for a tourer and the bike can carry one of us, a big pillion and a whole load of kit in the panniers without straining.  Best of all they look really cool.

The Indian range starts from as little as €12,999 and to book a test ride call any of the team on 015385005.

Battery Tender

CHARGE!!!

Keep it tended

Distributed by our sister company, AKB and sold through a wide network of Irish motorcycles, as well as here in the store, is the range of battery chargers and maintainers from Deltran, the Battery Tender range. The American company has been around for more than a few years and their strategic initiative continues to focus on both innovation and customer satisfaction.
If, like some people, you park your bike up over winter you may well want to take a look at some of the companies products. While they have a huge range of kit, one that we really like is the Battery Tender 800 Lithium which is designed to charge any 12 volt lithium battery.
The chargers input is 120VAC @60 Hz and it features the companies own “Supersmart Technology”. This means that as well as being weather proof and incredibly light, at a little over half a kilogram the unit also features some very clever technology.
The charger is spark proof and short circuit protected. This means the chances of you setting fire to your bike are greatly reduced! It’s also reverse polarity protected. Say a journalist, for example, attempted to charge a battery they may put the wrong connectors on the wrong poles the unit won’t destroy either itself or the battery. Very clever indeed.
There is an ‘auto recovery’ mode for batteries that have almost had it and each product from the range including the 800 Lithium comes with a full three year warranty. Prices for the range begin from as little as €45. Keep your pride and joy charged. Give any of us a call on 015385005…
